607. NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION – Inertia
Our vast universe exploded or inflated into existence from a point of singularity. All the matter and energy, was concentrated in a region smaller than a coin or the head of a needle. The beginning point from which the universe exploded is the Big Bang. I don’t think I am telling you anything new. You have read this and seen the pictures.
Given:
All scientific laws and theories must be compatible. Two scientific theories that are incompatible mean that one is incorrect or both.
This article compares these theories:
- The theory of cosmic evolution and
- The first law of conservation of motion – inertia
Note that the theory of evolution is not just about biological evolution. It is about cosmic, chemical, stellar, organic, vertical, and horizontal evolutions. For this discussion, we look at Newton’s third law of motion and cosmic evolution.
Definition of Newton’s First law: Every body remains in a state of resting velocity unless acted upon by an external force. This means that in the absence of an outside force, the center of mass of a body remains at rest. My interpretation of Newton’s 1st Law of Motion, the resting position of the universe, the point of singularity, requires a force to push the expansion past its present position.
Question: Is the expansion of the universe in conflict with Newton’s First Law of Motion? There are two issues here. What force started the universe expansion moving it from zero speed in the state of nothingness or rest into a high-speed expanding universe?

Discussion:
To accelerate, or to change your velocity, there has to be an input of energy. For the car example, you have to press on the gas pedal to overcome inertia. For the bicycle example, you have to start to pedal and reach a velocity that you are in motion and a state of balance. You are using a force F to overcome your at rest position which has no momentum.
Dominos has a good example of inertia. Have you seen a dominos chain reaction? This is when one domino set in the right place and a chain of dominos set down stream. There are several “domino records” one can see on YouTube: longest domino line with 15,524 dominoes, longest domino wall at 169 feet, and the most toppled by a group at almost 4.5 million. Imagine if the first domino did not fall, what would have happened to the rest? Nothing. This is the 1st law of motion in non-action. Nothing happens because there is no force or inertial to make something happen. On the other hand, if one domino falls, they all fall because the dominos are lined up to allow the upstream domino to influence the downstream domino. Inertia of the upstream domino influences the next domino.
Conflict:
There is obviously a conflict between what cosmologist’s claims and Newton’s first law of motion. Cosmologist claim that a force overcame the gravity of what seems to be a black hole with all of the universe’s matter, dark and otherwise, in a small point of singularity. What force had the effect of overcoming the inertia of a black hole? What could change the universe’s resting position.
Conclusion:
I must be intellectually honest and choose the most reasonable explanation. That is that something bigger than “explosion” initiated the Big Bang expansion. This means I choose the Laws of Nature and put the theory of evolution back into the “hypothesis” category.
Harry’s Engineering Logic Check:
Think of the trillions of stars in our universe. Think about the universe’s mass. Now add even more dark matter that we cannot see. Ask yourself how did all of our nearly unimaginable number of energized stars and immeasurable mass of the universe start moving outwardly. Ask yourself what force could change the momentum of all of the mass in the universe from zero to expansion such as we see today.
