How Many States of Matter Are There?

When I learned science in the 1960-1970’s, I learned there were 3 states of matter: solid, liquid and gas.  The example given was water that could be in either state depending on the temperature.

Sates of Matter Expanding on this we learned that what could look solid was really liquid.  An example of this was cold honey; but what we were really learning here was “viscosity”.

We also learned what could look solid was really very solid.  An example of this was a diamond; but what we were really learning was “hardness”.

I won’t go into other states of matter, such as brittleness, elasticity, surface tension, and how void matter really is with all of the space between electrons and the nucleus.

But did not know that there is another state of matter?  Plasma is the 4th state of matter.  It is an electrically charged state of matter.  Plasma forms in the hot gases of the sun.  On Earth, plasma is created inside lighting and inside nuclear power plants.

What does this have to do with is evolution a theory?  I am getting there and why I enjoy science.

Hot & Cold GuysMy question for you… If the 4th state of matter is created by adding heat to atoms so they become very excited, what happens if you remove heat from atoms so they become very cold?

Drum roll please!

Yes, you guessed it!  You have the 5th state of matter.  You can read about Bose-Einstein Condensates (the 5th state of matter) here, but that  is not what I find most interesting.

What I like about this science story is that two scientists, Eric Cornell and Carl Weiman created the 5th state of matter, won a Noble Prize, and named it after the two guys who predicted the 5th state but did not have the equipment to create it.  The  matter is named after Albert Einstein and Satyendra Bose who  predicted the matter in 1920.

I love this story.

Now maybe I am just naïve or a romantic, but I love science.  I love learning, discovering, and experiencing our universe.  I love two dudes predicting something they will never see.  I love two other dudes (or dudettes for the women scientist) working on another scientist prediction to prove them right or wrong.  I love the idea of dudes predicting things and then testing it.  Finding truth.

I do not like religion hooking into science.  Specifically, I do not like religious priest (evolutionist) calling their religious belief (evolution) a scientific theory (theory of evolution).  Is evolution a theory?  See my article: How can evolution be a theory?

I love science and the cool stories.  I hope you enjoyed the above story and information about the states of matter.  I am thrilled with science and the discoveries of the universe;  finding truth and how things work.

I am disappointed at how religious priest use science to explore history so that they can promote their religious belief; the theory of evolution.
