While the Big Bang Theory is treated as scientific truth; not to be challenged, there have been some alternate theories explaining the beginning of our universe. There were a number of serious alternatives considered for decades (see the below list). However, a scientific consensus has developed with the discovery of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in June 1963.
While the Big Bang theory dominates as the only valid theory of our cosmic origins, Space.com helps us with some alternative theories in their article entitled, “Alternatives to Big Bang Theory Explained” and Click Here to read Is Evolution A Theory article on Possible Origins of the Universe.
Steady State – Steady State theory proposes a continuous creation of matter throughout the universe to explain the universe’s apparent expansion. A Steady State universe would be infinite; without a beginning or end. However, evidence found since the mid-1960s indicates that this theory is incorrect.
Eternal Inflation theory – Eternal Inflation theory proposes a universe that rapidly expanded during a brief period called inflation. This theory proposes that inflation has not stopped, and has been going on for infinite time. This theory proposes new universes coming into existence in a vast complex called the multiverse.
Oscillating Model – The Oscillating theory proposes an endless series of Big Bangs, followed by a Big Crunch that restarted the cycle. The oscillating model is endless cycles.
String Theory – The String theory proposes a universe that is in reality nothing like what it appears like in our observations. It is actually a flat hologram projected onto the surface of a sphere; or our universe could be a completely digital simulation running on a large computer.
While the above theories are interesting to discuss, sky surveys and deep field measurements has revealed a Universe consistent with the Big Bang theory – ruling out alternatives listed above. The evolution of the elemental abundances that we observe today demonstrate the validity of the Big Bang.
As the Forbes article entitled, “This Is Why There Are No Alternatives To The Big Bang.” states:
“If you can come up with an alternative explanation for these four observations, you will have the start of a viable alternative to the Big Bang. Explain the observed expansion of the Universe, the large-scale structure and the evolution of galaxies, the Cosmic Microwave Background along with its temperature and spectral properties, and the relative abundances and evolution of the elements in the Universe, and you’ll challenge the theory of our cosmic beginnings.”
Which “beginning theory” do you like? Is Evolution A Theory? Could the Big Bang have occurred from which the universe we know evolved? The only theory that is plausible as a “scientific theory” is one that is compatible with the existing Laws of Nature. Would you agree?
The Big Bang theory is a fairly good theory because it fit reality and conforms with many Laws of Nature. But there are many questions (go to our I Have Questions page) that the Big Bang theory does not answer.
Go to our Start Here page and begin examining the scientific evidence on why the theory of evolution is a failed theory because it is un-compatible with many of the Laws of Nature.
