Is the next genetically engineered creature going to be a Dragon?
Is evolution a theory? How can the theory of evolution be a valid scientific theory when this proven “scientific theory” is incompatible with scientific laws such as the Law of Information? Putting the law simply, information cannot be created. It cannot just come into existence. But it can be edited. Using a precise gene editing technique, representatives from the University of Missouri were able to edit pigs DNA to breed pigs that do not produce a specific protein necessary for the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus to spread in the animals. Their research was published in journal Nature Biotechnology.
According to a Yahoo news article, “LONDON (Reuters) – A British animal genetics firm, working with U.S. scientists, has bred the world’s first pigs resistant to a common viral disease, using the hot new technology of gene editing.” Read the entire article here.
According to the published article in Nature Biotechnology, gene-edited pigs are protected from porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRS) which is the most economically important disease of swine in North America, Europe and Asia, costing producers in North America more than $600 million annually. My point here in the is evolution a theory blog is to point out that after thousands of years of genetic engineering by farmers, we have a wide variety of sheep, dog, wheat, etc. but no new species. Now after years of genetic engineering of DNA code, we can turn some genes off and on but we have no new species.
There is concern that genetic engineering will cause problems as they tamper more and more with genetic code; especially in humans. Motherboard discusses this in some detail here. While that is another story, the questions remains.
How did this very complex DNA and RNA coded information get created? Evolution’s explanation as one of my friend stated, “it just happened over time” is not scientific. Information does not create itself.
