NBC News reported in their article entitled “As network new leadership shuffles, doubts about Future Loom” “Two of the biggest players in broadcast news found themselves facing rocky transitions last week. Both ABC News and CBS News announced new leaders, and the executive producer of ABC’s “Good Morning America” abruptly left the network.”
In the era of streaming and social media, I know that the sharp decline in viewership and digital transition in news media is complex.
I can’t help but think that one of the main reasons the top 3 news outlets have lost ratings and relevance is their lack of presenting news in a truthful and objective manner.
It may have started when Walter Cronkite stepped out of his familiar role as impartial anchor and expressed his “speculative, personal, and subjective” view when he presented his editorial about the Tet Offensive in February 1968 saying the Vietnam War was “mired in stalemate”. Tom Shales of the Washing Post reported that Cronkite was credited with massive swings in public opinion, turning the public against the Vietnam War.
Maybe the next major event that shifted public confidence in the “unbiased” news media was Dan Rather. According History News Network, “Timothy Crouse concludes, in his book The Boys on the Bus, that Dan Rather had a longstanding pattern of presenting rumors as fact, or apparently even outright lying and rule-breaking, are entirely acceptable so long as they advance a liberal agenda.“
I was in a journalism program for a short time and thought it was fun digging for the facts and truth. I love reading both sides of an argument or debate. Only then can anyone discern truth and make an educated decision on his/her position. I hope you feel the same way.
